The City from the Book

Long before I ever set foot in Pittsburgh, I knew it through the pages of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It was one of my favorite books, so my first trip there felt a little like stepping into a story I already loved.

I spent the days crossing rivers and wandering neighborhoods. On the North Side, the stadium sat across from rows of old Victorian homes and a quiet park pond full of ducks. Downtown, glass towers and grand old buildings competed for the sky, and at the Point, the outline of Fort Duquesne marked where the city began. And everywhere, those yellow bridges stitched the city together over the water.

I kept looking at Pittsburgh the way the book had taught me to, as a place where ordinary streets could hold something bigger. Seeing it in person, I finally understood what it meant to feel infinite.
