Savannah, Georgia (October 2019)
The Road West Begins
After coming back to Atlanta, I packed up my life. I was moving west. I quit my job and gave myself two and a half weeks on the road, taking the long way before heading to my new home. The first stop was Savannah.
I started along River Street, then wandered the squares beneath live oaks draped in Spanish moss. The Forsyth Park fountain, the gold dome of City Hall, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and the Mercer House all lived up to their reputations. The theaters and storefronts gave the old city a creative pulse, and a hot pink Karmann Ghia parked on the street fit right in. Bonaventure Cemetery was peaceful and haunting in equal measure.
Savannah felt like the right place to begin. It’s a city that takes its time, and for once, so could I.
