Baltimore, Maryland (December 2021)
Paint and Steel
Over a couple of days, I went looking for the grittier side of Baltimore, the corners where art and industry meet.
Graffiti Alley was a riot of color, with every inch of wall layered in tags, portraits and messages. Down near the stadiums, old warehouses, rail lines and rusted steel frames told the story of a working city, and a faded sign for steel fabrication and ornamental ironwork still hung over one doorway. My friend August joined me for a few portraits against the painted walls.
Baltimore doesn’t hide its rough edges, and I’ve come to love it for that. There’s beauty in the layers and a story painted on every wall.
