Farewell to Disney Channel Rocks! (April 2013)
The Last Time Disney Channel Rocked
Hollywood Studios has always been a park built around the idea of performance, and the Disney Channel Rocks stage that anchored the Hollywood Boulevard pavilion was one of its most reliable heartbeats. The show had been running long enough to become part of the rhythm of the park, something guests stumbled into and stayed for, something cast members poured themselves into show after show. Marcus had been part of that cast for over a year, and when the decision came down that DCR was ending its run, he called and asked me to be there with a camera. I already knew what that meant.
The final performance had everything the show always had, the layered costumes, the red Jordans, the stage lights cutting through the Florida afternoon, the crowd pulled in until they were dancing too. Marcus gave it everything. So did everyone on that stage. There was a moment near the end where a performer crouched down to connect with a guest in a wheelchair covered in streamers and Disney merchandise, and the whole thing crystallized into something bigger than a theme park show.
I had watched Marcus dance in parks and parking lots and marble colonnades across Orlando. This was different. He had asked me to come so he would have something to remember the day by, and I understood that. Some endings deserve a witness.
