Baton Rouge, Louisiana (November 2018)

The Castle on the Hill

A friend from Atlanta had a real estate course in Lafayette, and I tagged along. With Baton Rouge just down the road, I could not pass up the chance to see Louisiana’s capital for myself.

Gray skies hung over the city all day, which suited it well. Along the Mississippi, the USS Kidd sat moored beside the riverfront. Up the hill, the Old State Capitol looks more like a castle than a government building, with white Gothic towers rising above a green lawn. A short walk away, the new Capitol tower climbs higher than any other state capitol in the country, and Huey Long’s statue stands in the gardens out front.

Some trips you plan around a place. This one I fit in around someone else’s plans, and Baton Rouge made the detour worth it.
