The Bridge I Was Afraid Of

I have a serious fear of heights, and bridges over water are the worst of it. So the Big River Crossing, nearly a mile of walkway suspended above the Mississippi, had been sitting on my list of things I was not quite ready for. This fall, I finally decided I was ready.

Step by step, I made it across the river, and the view from the middle was worth every nervous breath. The Memphis skyline and the Pyramid stretched along the far bank, with nothing but open water and sky in between. Back on solid ground, fall had taken over downtown. Red and gold leaves lined the trolley tracks and Court Square, riverboats drifted past the bluff, and a squirrel or two posed better than I had any right to expect.

Some photos are about the place. These are about the person holding the camera, who walked out over the water anyway and came back with the city at his feet.
