Dallas, Texas (April 2016)
Gardens, Glass, and Dealey Plaza
My first trip to Dallas came by way of two friends from two different chapters of my working life. Steven and I worked together at American Express, and Rhonda and I at Express Scripts, so the visit felt less like travel and more like catching up.
The Dallas Arboretum was all color, with gardens, water, and blooms in every direction, and I even wandered into a stranger’s portrait session along the way. Downtown traded that softness for glass and concrete, from Thanksgiving Square to the undersides of the highways, and Deep Ellum covered its brick in murals.
Dealey Plaza was the part I was not ready for. I had studied President Kennedy’s assassination for years, but standing there turned something I had only read about into a place I could walk through, and it was more sobering than any book.
