Wild Things and Old Friends

The zoo in Fort Worth was the kids’ idea, and Steven and I were happy to follow their lead. I had not seen his oldest since he was a baby, so part of the day was simply getting to know who he had become.

The animals gave us plenty to talk about, and the kids gave me plenty to watch. We wandered from one exhibit to the next with no real plan, stopping wherever something caught someone’s attention, though nothing held a crowd quite like the hippo coming up out of the water.

It was the kind of ordinary family outing that is easy to take for granted. Spent with Steven and his boys, it felt like anything but.
