Washington, District of Columbia (September 2016)
The Capital on Foot
I had been to Washington before, but never with my camera. When I went to visit my friend D’Arcee, he still had to work, so I spent the days exploring the city on my own and catching up with him in the evenings.
I started in Arlington, crossed over to the National Mall, and ended up in Georgetown. Each part of the city felt different: quiet and reverent in one place, grand and official in another, and easygoing and lived in by the time I reached the rowhouses and storefronts. At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, I watched the guard keep his watch with a precision that made the whole plaza go silent.
I came back with more photos than I knew what to do with. Most of all, I came back understanding that this city reads differently when you finally slow down long enough to look at it.
