Columbia, South Carolina (May 2019)
Between Here and Home
The second stop on my drive home to North Carolina was Columbia. I only had an afternoon, so I spent it downtown seeing as much of the capital city as I could.
The South Carolina State House sits at the center of it all, with its copper dome and grounds full of monuments and old trees. Nearby, the streets are lined with brick churches, a lion standing guard, and an old street clock that still keeps time. I also found the Busted Plug, a giant fire hydrant sculpture several stories tall that’s hard to miss and even harder not to smile at.
Columbia gave me history and a bit of whimsy in one short visit. It was a good reminder to stop and look around, even when the road is pulling you somewhere else.
