Houston, Texas (November 2019)
Among the Giants
The road west continued into Texas, and my next stop was Houston.
Downtown Houston is a city of glass and steel, with towers that seem to compete for the sky. Between them, I found pockets of history: the spire of Annunciation Church, the restored storefronts around Market Square, and the old Majestic Metro marquee. In Sam Houston Park, historic homes and a tiny church sit right at the foot of the skyscrapers, shaded by sprawling live oaks. Near the ballpark, a giant baseball rested in the landscaping, a reminder that this is a city that loves its teams.
Houston felt enormous and ambitious, a city always building upward. Seeing its oldest corners hold their ground among the giants reminded me that you can grow without forgetting where you came from.
