Santa Fe, New Mexico (November 2019)
The City Different
The road west carried me out of Texas and into New Mexico, where Santa Fe welcomed me with clear blue skies and warm adobe walls.
The city feels unlike anywhere else I had been. Earth-toned buildings line the narrow streets, accented by turquoise doors and carved wooden gates. I visited the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the delicate Loretto Chapel, and the Santuario de Guadalupe, each with its own sense of quiet devotion. Around the plaza, old trading posts, bronze statues and bookshops filled the blocks, and strings of dried red chiles glowed deep crimson.
Santa Fe felt rooted and timeless, shaped by faith, art and the desert itself. It was the first place on the trip where the landscape truly told me I had arrived in the West.
