Baltimore, Maryland (April 2021)
One Neighborhood at a Time
Over two days, I set out to learn Baltimore one neighborhood at a time, wandering streets I hadn’t explored yet.
I walked past rows of brick and painted rowhouses with bright doors, corner shops and old firehouses, and through Bolton Hill, where the clock tower of Mount Royal Station rose above the trees. From Federal Hill, the downtown skyline stretched across the harbor. Stone churches anchored nearly every few blocks, and flowers bloomed in tiny front gardens and pots beside marble steps. Murals covered walls throughout the city, and one, with a big red heart, simply encouraged passersby to love themselves.
The more I explored, the more Baltimore revealed itself in layers of history, art and everyday life. Each neighborhood had its own personality, and I was starting to feel at home in all of them.
