Carson City, Nevada (May 2020)

Silver Dome, Shaded Streets

I decided to explore more of the valley and headed south to Carson City, Nevada’s capital.

Most of my time was spent wandering the historic west side, where Victorian homes with wraparound porches, brick storefronts and white church steeples line quiet, tree-shaded streets. Around the Nevada State Capitol, the silver dome rose above green lawns, with the legislative building and state offices nearby. Downtown still had a bit of old casino flair, and the gardens were bursting with poppies, peonies and columbines. Irises bloomed in nearly every yard, in shades of purple so deep they looked almost black.

Carson City felt calm, gracious and full of history, a small capital with a big story. It was another reminder that my new home sits in a valley full of places worth discovering.
