California Within Reach

Living in Reno put Northern California within easy reach, so I made the two hour drive west to explore Sacramento.

I started in Old Sacramento, where Gold Rush era buildings with wooden balconies line cobblestone streets and a vintage steam locomotive rests near the California State Railroad Museum. From there I wandered through downtown and into Midtown, where murals and painted utility boxes brightened nearly every corner, and grand Victorian homes sat behind iron gates. One mural reimagined Van Gogh’s Starry Night over the city, with the golden Tower Bridge glowing beneath the swirling sky. I ended at the California State Capitol, its white dome rising above the gardens of Capitol Park.

Sacramento felt layered with history and color. Being able to explore a whole new state in an afternoon reminded me how much my move had opened up.
