On a Whim

Some of my best days with the camera start with no plan at all. One morning I got in the car on a whim and pointed it toward Philadelphia, a short drive up the road from Baltimore.

City Hall, with William Penn standing high on top, anchors the center of everything. I made my way out the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, then wandered back through Center City and down Broad Street. In the Italian Market, old signs for Sarcone’s Bakery and Ralph’s still hang over the sidewalks, and murals brighten walls all across the city.

Philadelphia rewarded the impulse. Sometimes the best trips are the ones you never planned.
