Terence (August 2011)

What the Light Did

Downtown Greensboro gave us everything that day. The light in particular was doing something special, that late summer golden hour that turns glass towers amber and wraps everything it touches in warmth. We moved through the city with it, letting the locations find us as much as we found them.

Terence had been shy when I first asked, but he showed up ready and gave the camera exactly what it needed. A white tee and bare feet through most of it, which turned out to be the right call. The city has enough texture on its own without competing with what someone is wearing. Carved stone walls, school lockers, open railings with the skyline behind them, a rooftop with a glass tower catching the last of the sun.

The closeups from that evening are some of my favorites from this period. The light found Terence in a way that doesn't happen every shoot, and we both knew it.
