Memphis, Tennessee (September 2019)

Butterflies and Blues

I came back to Memphis again and decided to see the city from sunrise to after dark. I spent the morning at Shelby Farms and the evening along Beale Street.

At Shelby Farms, the lake was calm and the gardens were alive with orange butterflies moving from flower to flower. After sunset I headed to the riverfront, where the Hernando de Soto Bridge lit up in shifting colors over the Mississippi. Then I walked Beale Street, where the neon signs glowed, the music spilled out of every doorway, and the crowd filled the street.

Memphis has a quiet side and a loud side, and I love them both. Spending a full day moving between the two reminded me why this city still has such a hold on me.
