Winston-Salem, North Carolina (June 2019)
Old Salem, New City
Before heading back to Atlanta, I finished my trip home with a visit to Winston-Salem, a city I had always passed through but never really explored.
Old Salem took me back a few centuries, with Moravian buildings of timber, brick and stone set along quiet, shaded streets. The giant tin coffee pot still stands at the edge of the village, a landmark as charming as it is odd. Downtown, the old courthouse and the shops along Fourth Street sit in the shadow of modern towers, while an old tobacco smokestack recalls the industry that built the city.
Winston-Salem holds its past and present side by side without either one crowding out the other. After a week of family, graduations and long drives, it was a peaceful way to close the trip.
