Aries (May 2021)

History Through New Eyes

Aries came to visit me in Baltimore, his first time in the Mid-Atlantic, and we took a day trip to Washington, DC so he could see the capital for himself.

We walked the monuments together, starting at the George Mason Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial across the Tidal Basin, then through the waterfalls and stone walls of the FDR Memorial. At the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Aries stood beneath Dr. King’s carved likeness, which felt especially meaningful to share with him. From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, we looked out over the Reflecting Pool to the Washington Monument, and we ended our walk outside the White House. His red and blue knit cap made him easy to spot in every crowd.

Showing Aries places he had only seen in books and on screens was a gift. Watching him take it all in, I saw our nation’s history through new eyes.
