High Point, North Carolina (May 2021)
Home, Once More
I came home to North Carolina because my grandmother had been placed in hospice care, and I knew that if I didn’t visit then, I might never get the chance again. While I was home, I also took time to photograph the city where I grew up.
I wandered through High Point with fresh eyes, past the historic log cabins and brick homestead at the High Point Museum, old churches and schools, and the furniture showrooms that earned the city its reputation as the Home Furnishings Capital of the World. The giant chest of drawers still stands proudly downtown, and the glowing Krispy Kreme sign brought back plenty of memories.
Seeing my hometown through the lens, knowing why I had come, made every familiar corner feel more precious. Some trips home are about the places, but this one was about holding on to the people who made them home.
