San Francisco, California (October 2020)
One More Before the Snow
I wanted to see San Francisco at sunrise, and I wanted one more visit before snow closed Donner Pass and made the drive over the mountains impossible.
I reached the waterfront just as the sky turned pink over the bay. From Fort Mason and the Marina, sailboats rested in still water while the city slowly woke up. I followed the shoreline along Crissy Field, past gulls and a white egret wading in the shallows, to Fort Point, where the Golden Gate Bridge soared overhead against a perfect blue sky. Farther along the cliffs, old coastal batteries looked out over the Pacific, and Alcatraz sat quietly across the water.
Watching the city wake up was a peaceful way to say goodbye for a while. It made the long drive back over the mountains feel completely worth it.
