Lake Tahoe, California (October 2020)

First Light on Tahoe

I had already explored the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, so this time I drove to Tahoe City, California, with one goal: to watch the sun rise over the lake.

I arrived before dawn and watched the sky shift from deep blue to gold as the sun broke over the far ridge and spread across the water. Gulls gathered on the rocks in the soft morning light, and a little boathouse sat at the end of a long pier with the mountains glowing behind it. On the drive back, I stopped again and again, finding turquoise coves, giant granite boulders, golden aspens and paddleboarders gliding across glassy water.

Some moments are worth waking up early for. Watching the light return to Tahoe reminded me how lucky I was to have a place like this just a short drive from home.
