Louisville, Kentucky (May 2025)

64 West to Louisville

Some detours are not detours at all. They are the plan.

I was driving from St. Louis to North Carolina to visit family and deliberately took Interstate 64 so I could stop in Louisville and Frankfort along the way. I had photographed Paducah the year before and wanted to keep building my picture of Kentucky, city by city. Louisville was the stop I had been looking forward to.

I kept my focus on the western edge of downtown, downtown proper, and the waterfront, letting the city show me what it had. What it had was a lot. The architecture along the streets leading into downtown carries real character, and the murals scattered throughout add the kind of color and voice that tells you a city is paying attention to itself. The waterfront offered a different pace entirely.

I had driven through Louisville before without stopping. I will not make that mistake again.
