Memphis in Every Light
Downtown Memphis in November offers two cities for the price of one. During the day, the fall color along South Main and Main Street Mall turns the urban landscape into something warmer and quieter than you expect from a city this size. At night, the neon of the Orpheum cuts into the sky, the Peabody sign glows red over the rooftops, and the streets take on a different kind of life entirely.
This collection came out of two separate outings with two distinct intentions. The first was to capture Memphis in fall before the color disappeared. The second was the beginning of something new: a deliberate effort to photograph the cities I visit after dark, to see what they look like when the crowds are gone and the lights take over. Memphis felt like the right place to start.
What you see here is a city that holds up in any light.
